E-Bikes

Why Is It Important To Certify Your Product

Certification in the E-Bike industry, ensuring safety and quality, to the global market with standards like ANSI/CAN/UL/ULC – 2271, 2272, 2849 and EN 15194.

Why Test and Certify

Most recently, E-Bike industry has grown more popularity with the public due to its sustainable commuting and action sport capabilities. As a brand or manufacturer ensuring the safety and relatability of E-Bikes has become non-negotiable. When testing your E-Bike model for safety, a certification will help your product stand out in the retail store.

Importance of Certification: Certifiying your E-Bike or micromobility products is a fundamental aspect of E-Bike manufacturing that directly test the safety and quality of your product. For manufacturers obtaining certification demonstrates a commitment to product safety and regulatory compliance. Consumers rely on certified E-Bikes to ensure their own safety.

On December 20, 2022, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued a directive to manufacturers, retailers, importers, and distributors of micromobility devices, emphasizing compliance with established UL safety standards. This directive encompasses products falling under UL 2272 and UL 2849, which specifically address the electrical systems in personal e-mobility devices (such as hoverboards) and eBikes, respectively.

Overview of Key Standards for E-Bikes and Micromobility Products

UL 2849: This standard covers the electrical system of e-Bikes powered by lithium-based rechargeable batteries, including pedal-assist and non-pedal assist e-Bikes. The minimum required components are the drive unit, battery, battery management system, interconnecting wiring, and power inlet or charger. It does not cover the mechanical structure of the e-Bike.

UL 2271: This safety standard is for the electrical systems of personal e-mobility devices, including electric-powered scooters. It focuses on evaluating the safety of the electrical drive system, battery, and other electrical components for energy and electrical shock hazards. It does not evaluate the device’s performance or reliability, nor does it assess physical hazards related to their use.

UL 2272: This safety standard is for the electrical systems of personal e-mobility devices, including electric-powered scooters. It focuses on evaluating the safety of the electrical drive system, battery, and other electrical components for energy and electrical shock hazards. It does not evaluate the device’s performance or reliability, nor does it assess physical hazards related to their use.

EN 15194: This European standard covers broader aspects of E-Bike safety and performance, including electrical safety, mechanical durability, and environmental impact considerations.
