A Milestone for Cargo Bike Safety: ACT-Lab and CityQ Complete EN 17860 Certification

We are proud to have worked with CityQ on an important milestone for the European cargo bike industry: the certification of its four-wheel cargo bikes against EN 17860, the new European safety standard for cargo cycles.

CityQ is the first European four-wheel cargo bike manufacturer to achieve certification to EN 17860, covering its Cargo, Pickup and Passenger configurations.

As part of the certification process, ACT-Lab conducted comprehensive laboratory and road testing, assessing key areas including braking, stability, structural strength, drivetrain performance, electromagnetic compatibility and reliability. Testing was also carried out at full load, with certified configurations supporting up to 200 kg payload and 450 kg gross vehicle weight.

Why It Matters

EN 17860 represents an important step toward establishing clear and consistent safety requirements for the growing cargo bike sector. Four-wheel cargo bikes are designed to carry significantly greater loads than conventional e-bikes, creating unique safety and performance considerations which EN 17860 was created to address.

This milestone demonstrates how robust testing and certification can support the continued development and adoption of cargo bikes for commercial and urban transport.

We are proud to have supported CityQ through this process and to contribute to the development of safer, more capable cargo mobility solutions across Europe.
