Outdoor camping tentThe Canadian General Standards Board (CGSB) published a new National Standard of Canada for tent flammability and labeling entitled CAN/CGSB-182.1-2020, Flammability and Labelling Requirements for Tents. This new standard updates CPAI-84, A Specification for Flame Resistant Materials Used in Camping Tentage.

This new standard was developed to be more relevant to tents in the current market, addressing the flammability properties of lighter, synthetic materials that have replaced the highly flammable waxed and oiled canvas tents of the past. The primary intention behind this update is to minimize fire hazards and decrease exposure to harmful flame-retardant coatings. CAN/CGSB-182.1 also reduces testing variability and allows for a greater degree of tent innovation to meet consumer needs and expectations.

The new labeling requirements include fire safety warnings and safe use instructions to further mitigate flammability risk.

This standard applies to consumer tents for outdoor use, including tents meant for both indoor and outdoor use. Products include camping tents, backpacking tents, suspended tents, tent trailers, children’s tents, sun shelters, and more.
